Rumors continue to spread about the potential release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Recent rumors claim it will be coming out in 2023-2024 due to announced marketing plans, although Rockstars have said the two things are related. Regardless of how soon the game is actually coming out, when will we get concrete news about it instead of relying on rumors? Will we get a GTA 6 release date in 2020, or will we need to wait longer?
The 2023-2024 rumors gained prominence due to Take-Two's marketing plans, which shows that their marketing commitment for that fiscal year is unusually high. However, Take-Two refuted this speculation, telling GameIndustry.biz that their marketing commitments seen in that report are for third-party developers rather than an internal developer like Rockstar. This suggests fans of third-party games published by Take-Two might want to take note of this report, rather than Grand Theft Auto fans.
That doesn't leave us with anything new to go one when it comes to the release date of GTA 6. We still have no way of knowing if it will get a surprise release date in 2020, or if it will be set for much further down the line.
Rockstar isn't in the habit of announcing a game immediately ahead of its release, with a two year gap between announcement and release being common, so even if we're looking at a 2022 launch, that still opens the door to learning the GTA 6 release date in 2020. Any further out, however, and it seems more likely we won't hear anything until 2021.
We're coming up on seven years since GTA 5 was released. In comparison, there was a five year gap between GTA 4 and GTA 5, not counting the expansions and spin-offs released in between. Four years passed between GTA San Andreas and GTA 4, once again with games released between them.
This makes the length of time between GTA 5 and GTA 6 feel especially long. Many fans think the long wait is because of GTA Online and that Rockstar feels no pressure to release a new game when its online game is still going strong.
On the other hand, some fans think it's simply a sign of how massive and expansive GTA 6 will be when it finally does come out.
The GTA 6 news drought hasn't come to an end yet, but we still have a long time left before we can definitely say we won't get a GTA 6 release date in 2020. For now, all we can do is wait and see what Rockstar has in store.
